Arsenal interim head coach Renee Slegers believes they can go to the top of the Champions League after coming from behind to beat Bayern Munich.

Mariona Caldentey converted a late penalty to send the Gunners into the quarter-finals as Group C winners after a thrilling victory over the German champions.

The Slegers side went into the game knowing they would finish top of the group with just three points in a game that was canceled due to a clash with the men’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Crystal Palace was relocated to the Emirates Stadium.

After equalizing from behind in the second half, Spanish striker Caldentey stepped up in the 86th minute and scored the penalty, which was won after her first-time shot hit defender Tuva Hansen’s hand.

Asked by DAZN if Arsenal can reach the final, Slegers said: “We have to have that belief and we have that belief, especially after today.”

“There are things we can do better in the game but it was the same against Liverpool. We didn’t play our best game, but we still found ways to win and that’s a sign of a top team.”

“The eight teams that advance will be top teams. It’s positive to see how women’s football has developed and how much football is being played.”
