Is New Year’s Eve a federal holiday? What you should know – NBC Chicago

While Christmas is over, many Americans are planning New Year’s Eve and New Year’s celebrations to mark the end of the holiday.

Those planning to gather with friends and family may also be wondering how the holidays will work with work schedules and which days are considered federal holidays in the United States.

According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, New Year’s Day is considered one of eleven federal holidays throughout the year, while New Year’s Eve is not considered a federal holiday.

This means government services such as mail delivery will not be available on New Year’s Day, but operations will continue as usual on New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Day marks the first holiday of the year and the first of two holidays in January, with Martin Luther King Jr. Day observed on the third Monday in January.

The following days are listed as federal holidays with dates for 2025, according to OPM:

  • January 1st: New Year
  • January 20: Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • February 17: Presidents’ Day (officially designated as Washington’s birthday)
  • May 26: Memorial Day
  • June 19: National Independence Day in June
  • July 4th: Independence Day
  • September 1st: Labor Day
  • October 13th: Columbus Day
  • November 11: Veterans Day
  • November 27: Thanksgiving
  • December 25th: Christmas

Additionally, January 20 in 2025 also serves as Inauguration Day, where federal employees in the Washington, D.C. area are entitled to an Inauguration Day holiday.

Many retailers will also be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day or both holidays, while others may be closed for the holiday.
