Is the Saints quarterback playing against the Packers today?

The New Orleans Saints were without starting quarterback Derek Carr in Week 15 against the Washington Commanders after he suffered an injury in Week 14 against the New York Giants. Carr suffered an injury to his non-throwing hand late in the game in that match, which was later determined to be multiple fractures in his left hand.

Here are the latest updates on Carr, his status for Week 16 and the rest of the season:

Update on Derek Carr’s injury

Derek Carr’s current status is that he will miss the Week 16 game between the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers as he continues to advance the schedule for a possible return this season. However, currently the timeline is unclear as reports conflict on the possibility of his return, which we will discuss in the next section. The current status of his hand is that he needs more recovery time before he can be sent onto the field. Therefore, he will remain out against the Packers and evaluate where he stands before the next two games.

How long will Derek Carr be out?

The current timeline we know regarding Carr is hazy at best. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Saints’ signal caller is “very unlikely” to return this season and that it will be at least a few weeks before he can keep up with contact.

However, the other reports we have suggest that he could return this season. Nick Underhill of Neworleans.football reported that “the book isn’t finally closed on Derek Carr’s season” and that if he manages to get his request back, he could potentially return for part of the remainder of the season.

The statement directly from interim head coach Darren Rizzi is a mix of both, as he was quoted on WWL Radio as saying, “We’ve just got to keep going and when he (Carr) gets to the point where he can function well.” I know enough to take part in the game…he wants to play and if he can, he will.”

Saints quarterback depth chart

The Saints’ current quarterback room is pretty similar to what it has been in recent weeks, with the two younger players and the addition of a veteran for posterity in case something goes wrong. As it currently stands, the current quarterback room consists of:

  • Spencer Rattler
  • Jake Haener
  • Ben DiNucci

In Week 15, Haener got the start of the first half and didn’t look particularly spectacular in his playing time. So the Saints came out at halftime and let Spencer Rattler walk in the second half, and he managed to stop the Saints from beating the Commanders with a failed two-point conversion. With that being said, Rattler will start this week.
