itch.io says it was removed by Funko

itch.io was completely offline for hours on Sunday evening – and the indie games marketplace blamed it on an automated takedown created on behalf of Funko, the maker of Funko Pop collectible figures.

“I kid you not, @itchio has been removed from @OriginalFunko,” the site posted on “Phishing report” on the website itch.io.

This report was sent to itch.io’s domain registrar iwantmyname, who disabled the website. This action was also likely carried out by an “automated system,” itch.io said.

itch.io claimed to have removed the “disputed page” that triggered the phishing report immediately after receiving the takedown notice, but said that no one at iwantmyname appears to have read the email confirming the page’s removal became.

A representative from iwantmyname, contacted by Polygon for comment, said: “The domain name has already been restored today after the registrant finally responded to our notice and took appropriate action to resolve the issue.” When iwantmyname’s response was sent , itch.io appeared to be back online in less than 40 minutes.

itch.io went back online between 5 and 6 a.m. EST on Monday morning after being completely offline for at least three hours for most users, including both players and developers using the open platform. Games and other products already purchased from itch.io could be used without any problems, but the storefront outage will have been a significant problem for developers using it for distribution.

The software allegedly used by Funko that brought down the itch.io website comes from a company called BrandShield. BrandShield describes itself as an “AI-powered online anti-counterfeiting solution” that monitors for “trademark infringement, phishing attempts, brand abuse and counterfeit activity.”

Polygon has reached out to itch.io and Funko for comment.
