Despite a five-day break since their last game, a narrow win over the Pelicans sealed by a three-pointer from Wembanyama, the Spurs are missing several key performers and will play shorthanded against the Portland Trail Blazers tonight. Stephon Castle is out with a bruised shoulder he suffered against New Orleans, and Tre Jones also has a shoulder problem that he suffered late in the Kings game against Damontas Sabonis when he took a crushing hit. Zach Collins is also out with back pain after falling early in the Pelicans game.

With the top two backup point guards out of the game, we can expect Blake Wesley and Malaki Branham, who have been out of the rotation recently, to see plenty of playing time on the court. Both players have some talent, but don’t have the kind of all-around game to break into regular minutes. However, tonight they have a chance to improve and get more playing time on the pitch if they perform well. Victor Wembanyama also missed part of the Pelicans game last Sunday but is not listed on the injury report so he should be good to go. The Blazers are at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, so this is the type of game that one might expect the Spurs to take control early, but if this season has taught fans anything, it’s that Spurs can beat anyone and they can lose to anyone.
