Jackson Shelstad’s great second half lifts the No. 12 Oregon men’s basketball team past USC

Jackson Shelstad scored 21 of his career-high 24 points in the second half and No. 12 Oregon overcame a 10-point deficit to beat USC 68-60 in the Big Ten men’s basketball opener Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

The Trojans led for most of the first 35 minutes and took a 38-28 lead with 15:33 left. But Shelstad and the Ducks were able to erase the deficit over the next 11 minutes, making it 55-55 on a three-pointer from Keeshawn Barthelemy with 4:37 left.

Then Barthelemy got a steal and Shelstad drilled a three-pointer to give Oregon its first lead since 2-0. The Ducks (9-0, 1-0 Big Ten) didn’t trail the rest of the game and remained undefeated despite the scare in front of 4,460 spectators at the Galen Center.

“We kept playing,” Oregon coach Dana Altman told the Big Ten Network, before quickly adding, “We still have a long way to go to be a good ballclub.”

Altman said the Ducks struggled with details and execution, but in the end they did enough against USC (5-4, 0-1).

Barthelemy made 4 of 5 threes to finish the game with 18 points and also had five assists on a night where Oregon shot just 38.2% from the field and struggled with foul trouble.

TJ Bamba missed his first 11 shots before finishing 2 of 13 for six points to go and five rebounds. Meanwhile, Nate Bittle and Jadrian Tracey had to sit out for a long time due to fouls before both were ultimately fouled in the final minutes.

Desmond Claude scored 22 points and Chibuzo Agbo added 18 to lead the Trojans.

Next: The Ducks return home to take on UCLA on Sunday at 3 p.m. (Big Ten Network).
