Jaguars HC Doug Pederson one day after Week 16 vs. Raiders: “We take responsibility”

JACKSONVILLE – Fifteen down, two left.

And while the first 15 games have been varying degrees of difficulty, Doug Pederson offered no excuses Monday as a disappointing 2024 regular season comes to an end.

The Jaguars just haven’t done it often enough.

“We just weren’t consistent enough in our game,” he said.

Pederson, in his third season as head coach of the Jaguars, spoke to the media Monday afternoon, a day after a 19-14 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. It was the Jaguars’ seventh loss in eight games, with the Raiders ending a ten-game losing streak.

The Jaguars played Sunday without starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and three of the season’s top four receivers – wide receivers Christian Kirk and Gabe Davis and tight end Evan Engram.

“It’s a difficult situation, but at the same time I’m not going to make excuses for it,” Pederson said. “We are who we are. We all take responsibility. That’s something we need to pay close attention to and try to fix.”

The Jaguars (3-12) took a 7-0, 14-13 lead on Sunday with running back Tank Bigsby rushing for a touchdown in the first quarter and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. catching a 62-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Mac Jones gave them the lead for good late in the third quarter.

But the Jaguars also committed eight penalties for 60 yards, with Bigsby and tight end Brenton Strange each recovering second-quarter fumbles of a touchdown or less in the Jaguars’ ninth loss of the season.

“It’s not an undisciplined group,” Pederson said. “If you were at training during the week, at meetings and everything that happens, then this is not an undisciplined group.”

Pederson said mistakes that lead to losses sometimes come from players trying more than is asked of them and “sometimes taking things into their own hands.”

“They’re different people,” Pederson said. “Sometimes you just try to do too much. It’s all with good intentions. It’s not a lack of discipline. They try to make a play and unfortunately sometimes they get it wrong and then something negative happens in the game.” “

Pederson added: “We just have to keep working to do what is asked of us. When we do that, great things happen. Good things happen. Good plays happen. We need to be able to get more out of it guys.”
