Jaguars need to show more fight, including protecting their quarterback

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A loss is a loss, but the way Sunday’s 23-20 loss to the Texans turned out is tough. Another narrow defeat, blah, blah, blah, still the same. The other part is awesome. Trevor Lawrence gets hit like that and some of his guys were willing to come out for him. But only some. That’s the line in the sand for me. You have to drive for your husband.

If you ever look up and see Evan Engram – one of the calmest, most relaxed guys on the roster – crashing like he did defending Lawrence, you know something is wrong and it’s time to get dressed. I loved seeing Engram and Brenton Strange and Jarrian Jones and the rest stand up for their teammates.

But the guys who should have stepped in to start and finish the situation were the offensive linemen. Their job is literally to protect the quarterback. They call them Guardians. GUARD. Your job is to guard the quarterback. It couldn’t be easier. Now Anton Harrison, Ezra Cleveland and Brandon Scherff have all gotten involved at some point.

But I’ve never missed Cam Robinson as much as I did on Sunday. He would have lost it. Robinson would have crashed and driven away the entire crowd even if he had been alone. Robinson would drive for his man.

But he’s gone and now the Jags have Walker Little at the left tackle spot. Who just got a new contract extension this morning? Have you ever had something like instant buyer’s remorse?

Lawrence is on the ground and Little is just standing there. And this is the guy they paid to protect the quarterback’s blind side? He’s played well this season and it seems like a solid deal, but after Sunday I quickly hit the undo button. I’m willing to sign a petition to bring Robinson back. At least he would protect the quarterback when he needed it most.

That brings me to the man who signed Little to that contract. I haven’t forgotten Trent Baalke. Who lets a man in the hot seat spend money for the future? Just horrible work. Baalke is known for not making deals in the middle of the season. But somehow the fan base is clamoring for his job and suddenly he shows up in the middle of the year with a deal. To me it seems like a power play, a message to people that he’s going to be here for a while. Maybe he will be, but one person who won’t be there is running backs coach Jerry Mack. He is the new head coach at Kennesaw State.

This was announced in the fourth quarter of the game. How did that work? Did his agent text him at halftime and Mack said, “Make the deal, I gotta get out of here!” I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a coach whose new job was officially announced during the game. This takes ship jumping to a whole new level. If that doesn’t tell you there are problems in the building, it won’t tell you anything. There are problems here that need to be solved.
