James Conner does not return for Week 17 loss

Conner (knee), who left Saturday’s game against the Rams in the second quarter and was questionable to return, never played in the contest again despite wanting to take the field back, ESPN.com’s Josh Weinfuss reports. Conner finished the loss with four carries for four yards and two receptions on three targets for four yards.

According to Arizona head coach Jonathan Gannon, Conner may have aggravated the knee injury he suffered last Sunday against Carolina by being “turned over” at the end of a carry early in the second quarter. After the Cardinals announced that it was questionable whether the veteran running back would be able to return to contention, Conner spent much of the rest of the game on the sideline with his helmet on and was never officially ruled out, despite being stared at by other coaches. Gannon mentioned that the plan for the game was for Conner to be “full-on,” and the head coach opined that the talented tailback “wasn’t healthy enough to get back in” after being pulled despite Conner’s wishes. Arizona has already been eliminated from postseason contention, which could be a factor in Conner’s status in the team’s regular-season finale next weekend against San Francisco.
