Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was instrumental in the team’s offensive success during a breakthrough third season.

A great attribute that he has at his disposal is his rapid speed. Williams is considered one of the fastest players in the game and believes strongly in his abilities. In fact, he’s so confident that he thinks he can run a 40-yard dash in 4.1 seconds.

“I think I can. I could probably run faster. I saw my brother saying he didn’t think it was a 4.1,” Williams said. “I believe in it. But people who know me know I can do it.”

There is little evidence on either side, as Williams was not a prospect in the 40-yard dash before the 2022 draft due to a knee injury he suffered in the national championship game during his senior year at Alabama.

“I never ran a 40. That’s what I’m trying to say. I never had to do that,” Williams said. “If Madden respects me enough to give me 98 Speed out of the gate? That’s a 4.1. No 40 and 98 speed? If I was a 99, it would be a 3.9 or a 4.0.”

Two of Williams’ teammates, quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, expressed doubts about whether Williams could actually accomplish this feat.

“Yeah, I guess if he says that, I don’t know. At some point we have to measure it,” Goff said. “He’s hard to find if we want to measure his 40, but he says 4.1, we have to hold him accountable.”

“I love Jamo, but I don’t know if he gets 4.1,” St. Brown added with a smile. “That’s crazy, that’s crazy.”

Grow as a player

Williams believes he still has room to develop in the midst of his breakout year as a player.

The speedster has shown a more nuanced route tree, along with added intensity as a run blocker and the ability to contribute more to the short and intermediate passing game in addition to his role as a deep threat.

But he’s not content with just those improvements in his quest to become one of the NFL’s best. Rather, he takes a far-reaching approach to his development.

“Everywhere. I’m not a perfect player, I’m not the best player at the moment, but I feel like I’m explosive and a real looker. But I have to work on everything just so I can be the best,” said Williams when asked where he can grow. “At the end of the day, that’s all I work for and what I want to do, for the name on the back of my jersey, for everyone who has the same last name, for my entire family . I just want them prove that I’m the best and just keep working whether you’re at the top, one of the front runners, you still have to work because there are people trying to get to your place I would say I have to “work on everything.”

Williams has impressed his teammates and coaches with his development over the year. By unlocking his skills, his speed brings an additional element for defenses to worry about. This fits perfectly with Detroit’s other roster of weapons, such as St. Brown and running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

“He had a great year and also missed two games. He’ll reach 1,000, I know that. He could do it in this game. Hopefully he does,” St. Brown said. “He does a lot for our offense, whether it’s in the running game. He puts his head in there, he really makes key blocks for us, he’s not afraid to block and dig up a safety. So that’s huge. Obviously his explosiveness, his verticality, his ability to take the edge off the defense. Emphasize security, DBs. And then whether it’s a putback or something like that, where you can get him the ball behind the line of scrimmage and he can be special with it. He brings a lot of firepower to our offense and I love having him out there and playing with him.”

Williams had his ups and downs early in his career. The deep connection he and Goff had in Sunday’s game, which resulted in an 82-yard touchdown, wasn’t always so clear, and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson explained that it took time for the duo to find their rhythm.

“Two and a half years,” Johnson said. “I mean, shoot, we struggled to really get on the same page that first year when he got healthy and as coaches we saw – we saw the potential and with Jared, he’s a timing, he is a rhythm quarterback, He needs reps just like the big ones… That’s the potential Jameson has for this offense and it’s nice to see a post like this against Single-High. I know that, it does wonders for our offense to get things like that on tape by the end of the season here and in the postseason.”

1,000 yard chase

The 2022 first-round pick has recorded 890 receiving yards in his 13 appearances this season. Despite missing two games midway through the year, the wideout needed just 110 yards in the final two games of the regular season to surpass 1,000 yards for the first time in his career.

Although Williams is aware of how close he is to the goal, he doesn’t put his individual successes above team goals.

“I am aware of it. “But I don’t try to force it,” Williams explained. “We still have two games left, that’s the top priority, getting a team win. If it comes, it comes, but it’s nothing I’m worried about.”

Since arriving in Detroit, Williams has never prioritized personal success over team victory. This approach doesn’t change even when it has a key milestone firmly in its grasp. Rather, he urged the team to put all of its personal goals aside as it pursues a Lombardi Trophy.

“Those things don’t matter, you just have to go out there the next game and try to make up for it. “These two games obviously set me back a little,” said Williams. “But the team still got the W in these two weeks without me. That’s really the main thing. I know people may have individual goals, but this far into the season I feel like people should put those aside. It’s time to win and it’s real now. It’s getting more and more real every week and the playoffs are coming soon. The barrel length is something I wasn’t worried about. I missed the two games and the down games I had. I’m still here, you know? I’m still in that area. But I hope I get it.”
