Latvian basketball player Janis Timma was found dead after falling from a residential building in Moscow.

According to local reports, the 32-year-old, who played for clubs such as Zenit Saint Petersburg and Olympiakos Piraeus during his successful Euro League career, was found in the stairwell of a residential building.

Timma’s untimely death occurred on the birthday of his ex-wife, Ukrainian singer and actress Anna Sedokova. In fact, it was reported that when his body was discovered on Monday, a phone with a message from Sedokova was found next to Timma.

The preliminary cause of death was determined to be suicide.

Timma and Sedokova, who were married in 2020, filed for divorce earlier this year. Devastated Sedokova posted an emotional message on Instagram after widespread reports of Timma’s death.

The 6’7″ small forward was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 60th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He was later traded to the Orlando Magic, which led to an appearance in the 2021 NBA Summer League.

Timma also represented Latvia in several junior and senior tournaments and was part of the team that won a bronze medal at the 2010 FIBA U18 European Championship. Since his debut in 2014, he has played a total of 35 games for his national team and scored 33 points.

He most recently faced backlash when he announced his intention to play professionally in Russia despite the country’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. His decision meant the end of his international career, as Latvian athletes are banned from taking part in Russian sporting events.

“This is something interesting for me,” he told Latvian broadcaster LSM+ in October. “(I) thought, why don’t you give it a try?”
