Every time we look at the Detroit Lions’ high-octane offense, coordinator Ben Johnson seems to pull a rabbit out of the hat. It’s no wonder Johnson is considered a top head coaching candidate for the upcoming NFL recruiting cycle.

I’ve watched a lot of football over the years. I have seen many different tricks and fakes, some of which were absolutely stunning.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like Johnson’s creative play call for Detroit early in the third quarter against the lowly Chicago Bears on Sunday. (Ironically, Johnson could be the Bears’ top candidate.)

With the Lions just outside the red zone, Johnson had both Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs pretend to stumble over to lure the Bears defense into the backfield. The move worked perfectly, and Goff turned around and fired a touchdown pass to the wide-open Sam LaPorta:

Man … What?

This is something out of a Pop Warner matchup, not an NFL game. The audacity of having your offensive backfield play as a Possum during a live sequence is unmatched. Kudos to Johnson and the Lions’ offense (as well as the Bears’ inept defense) for getting through the game without a hitch.

This is football poetry, folks.
