Jared Goff delivers an MVP-level performance

The Detroit Lions’ offensive performance was exceptional and the defense found a good rhythm in the second half.

After trailing by eight players in the locker room, the Lions outscored the San Francisco 49ers 27-13 after halftime to secure a 40-34 win. It’s the Lions’ 14th win of the season and gives the team momentum heading into the regular season finale against Minnesota, where the NFC North crown and No. 1 seed in the postseason are on the line.

Here are facts about the Lions’ win over the 49ers on Monday.

STUDY: QB Jared Goff

Goff was exceptional for the Lions on Monday, driving the offense to 40 points and scoring on every drive except one that ended in a turnover on downs inside the 10-yard line and two others that ended with knee- Downs ended.

He was masterful, completing 26 of 34 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns. He made several key throws, including three third-down conversions on the first drive of the second half. One of those throws was a perfectly placed ball down the sideline to Allen Robinson.

The veteran passer threw a touchdown to Sam LaPorta to end that drive and then gave the team the lead when he hit Amon-Ra St. Brown with a fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line.

DUD: LB Ben Niemann

The Lions’ linebacking corps was exploited in the first half as the 49ers’ offense was dominant in the middle of the field. Niemann was targeted on a pass to Ricky Pearsall that went 39 yards, and another pass early in the game that went 13 yards to Chris Conley.

STUDY: WR Jameson Williams

Williams’ quick start to the game got the offense moving early. The Alabama product scored the team’s first two touchdowns of the game, including a 3-yard run and a 42-yard hook-and-ladder on a pitch from Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The third-year wideout moved closer to 1,000 yards this season with five catches for 77 yards, putting him 33 yards away from the mark. He’s becoming more reliable on offense and has become a primary target at every level, but leaves no doubt about his abilities as one of the league’s fastest players.

DUD: LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin

Like Niemann, Reeves-Maybin was on the wrong end of several big games. On a swing pass in the first quarter, he missed a tackle in the backfield and was then tackled by a wheel route that went 40 yards to running back Isaac Guerendo.

In the first half, Brock Purdy threw for 200 yards and the 49ers offense dominated. It was a difficult performance in the first two quarters, but the defense was able to pull itself together and make enough stops to secure the win.

STUDY: RB Jahmyr Gibbs

Without David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs has taken over the role of lead running back. On Monday, he totaled 163 yards on 22 touches. He was a force from the first snap, rushing for 60 yards on his first six touches.

Although the momentum of the running game eventually faded, Gibbs continued to find ways to contribute. The dam broke late in the game when he tied the game with a 30-yard touchdown with less than three minutes to play.

With Monday’s performance, Gibbs surpassed 1,200 rushing yards in his second NFL season.

DUD: CB Terrion Arnold

As the de facto top cornerback without Carlton Davis, Arnold struggled to contain Ricky Pearsall on Monday. The rookie was beaten early and gained a big lead when Brock Purdy hit Pearsall for a big lead and set up a touchdown in the second quarter. Pearsall finished the game with eight catches for 141 yards and a score.

Arnold briefly left the game in the third quarter but returned. After the rookie was limited in training all week due to illness, he was exposed at points in Monday’s game.

Stud: S. Kerby Joseph

When the Lions faltered defensively, Joseph stepped up to the plate and made two huge plays. Detroit prides itself on helping the offense by getting takeaways on defense, and Joseph caught two passes for sole possession at the top of the NFL standings.

Both of Joseph’s interceptions came after the Lions ran out of luck. His first came one play after Brian Branch was cited for pass interference, while the second play came after Branch was whistled for unnecessary roughness.

The Illinois product also added six tackles to his tally.

DUD: DE Al-Quadin Muhammad

Muhammad was called out for his defensive tackle on George Kittle early in the game. He was part of a defensive line that had trouble getting to Purdy in the first half and didn’t record a sack until the fourth quarter when Myles Adams came home.

The veteran defensive end did not record a tackle. Fellow edge rusher Za’Darius Smith had a quarterback hit but also didn’t record a tackle.

Stud: TE Sam LaPorta

LaPorta was effective in crucial situations for the Lions, particularly in the second half. He scored a third-down touchdown to open the scoring in the third quarter, then added a fourth-down conversion that helped set up a Jake Bates field goal.

Overall, LaPorta had six catches for 64 yards. He also helped Williams on his touchdown run by blocking two separate 49ers defenders in the red zone to seal off the running lane.
