Jay-Z and Diddy rape accuser can remain anonymous in sexual assault lawsuit

Jay-Z has suffered a legal setback in a lawsuit brought by a woman who accused him and fellow music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually abusing her when they were teenagers.

Judge Analisa Torres ruled Thursday that the Alabama woman identified as Jane Doe in her lawsuit can remain anonymous in the proceedings, according to court records reviewed by USA TODAY.

Torres, noting that the verdict could be reviewed later in the trial, cited several sensitive details in the woman’s lawsuit, including Doe’s allegations of sexual abuse, her alleged mental health issues and her risk of being threatened by Combs. because she spoke out against him.

USA TODAY has reached out to Jay-Z’s representatives for comment.

Earlier this month, a lawyer for Jay-Z asked the court to require Doe to reveal her identity.

“Mr. Carter deserves to know the identity of the person who is accusing him – in a sensationalistic and high-profile manner – of criminal conduct, seeking massive financial compensation and tarnishing a reputation built over decades,” the March 9 filing states. December .

The woman who sued Combs in October for drugging and raping her at an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty when she was 13 changed her lawsuit on Dec. 8, naming Jay-Z as the other male celebrity who killed her had sexually abused.

In a statement at the time, Jay-Z called the lawsuit an “extortion attempt” by Texas-based attorney Tony Buzbee. Buzbee’s law firm later sued Jay-Z’s entertainment company Roc Nation and his legal team for allegedly offering a former client money in exchange for suing Buzbee’s firm.

Jay-Z’s motion to dismiss Jane Doe’s lawsuit was denied by the judge

Judge Torres’ ruling Thursday also included denying Jay-Z’s previous request to dismiss Doe’s lawsuit against him.

In a memorandum of law filed on December 18, the rapper’s lawyers asked the judge to dismiss him from the woman’s amended lawsuit and dismiss it in its entirety. They pointed to an interview with NBC News in which Doe admitted that she “made some mistakes” in her recollection of the alleged assault.

“These allegations are without merit and are completely refuted by the statements made by Plaintiff and her father to NBC,” Jay-Z’s lawyers said in the memorandum. “The salacious allegations against Mr. Carter serve no purpose other than to harass and pressure him to settle a lawsuit based on false allegations.”

The filing also sought to preserve evidence in the case, as lawyers claimed there was a “significant risk that Buzbee will seek to destroy documents or other evidence that would show that he knew or should have known that the allegations in the complaint were false.”

Although Doe recanted certain details of her claims, she told NBC that she stands by her claims. Jay-Z once again denied the woman’s allegations in a statement released after the interview was published.
