Jayden Daniels “wanted” Washington to a playoff win against the Falcons

Daniels has generated 12 touchdown passes in the fourth quarter or overtime, the most by a rookie in NFL history. He also has five TD throws in the final 30 seconds of regulation or overtime, two more than any quarterback has scored in a single season since 1970.

The poise in big moments has impressed his experienced teammates.

“These are the moments you want to be in,” linebacker Bobby Wagner said. “He gets beat and makes big plays, his confidence and demeanor never changes. You know he knows he’s going to make a play, and everyone on the sidelines and on the field believes he’s going to make a play.”

Ertz added: “Yeah, I wish I had something really funny to say, but he’s really the same guy. You see him on the bench, whether it’s right before the two-minute drill and overtime, he’s literally the same person. “Whether it was OTAs where we were practicing against the defense for two minutes or us with the chance of getting into the playoffs. He’s literally the same guy I’ve never been a rookie before, he loves to learn and he just exudes such quiet confidence. He’s not a great guy, but we all know how good he is, how much faith we have in him. And that’s why he doesn’t need to say anything.

Washington erased a 10-point halftime deficit with two long consecutive TD drives and a field goal march to take a 24-17 lead. When the defense couldn’t stop Atlanta from forcing overtime, Daniels took control and led a 12-play, 75-yard march in the extra frame to secure a playoff spot.

With the 10-point comeback to lead the Eagles by 14 points last week, Daniels became the fifth rookie since 1950 to lead his team to consecutive double-digit comeback victories.

“I just tried to make plays and help the team as best I could to win this football game,” Daniels said. “Whether that means sitting back there and throwing the ball or running — anything, man. I just want to win.”

Washington won many more wins in Daniels’ first season than they have in a long time. The Commanders won more than 11 games in a season for the first time since 1991 (14-2, won Super Bowl XXVI). Sunday marked Washington’s first OT win since Week 8, 2014, at Dallas (0-4-2 in the last six OT games).
