Jayden Quaintance records third double-double to lead Arizona State past UMass

Trap game? No doubt. But the Arizona State Sun Devils men’s basketball prevailed, defeating Massachusetts 78-62 in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Bobby Hurley’s team had lost their last game before the Christmas break in five years and it was also their third trip across the country this season.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Minutemen led 46-41, but ASU erased that with a 19-3 run, and a 3-pointer from BJ Freeman gave ASU (9-2) a 60-49 lead , and the Sun Devils never looked back.

Freshman Jayden Quaintance posted his third career double-double, finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds. He entered the game ranked second nationally in blocked shots, increasing his total by four. Basheer Jihad scored a team-high 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Alston Mason scored 13 points, five rebounds and six assists.

Guard Rahsool Diggins led UMass with 24 points. Sophomore Akil Watson, who played as a true freshman at ASU last year, contributed seven points and six rebounds.

ASU finished the game with a 44-33 advantage on the boards and a 38-30 points advantage in the paint. The Sun Devils shot 45.2% (28 of 62) while UMass shot 38% (23 of 60).

The game was the last before ASU (9-2) begins Big 12 play on Dec. 31 at Brigham Young.
