Jayson Tatum paves the way for a balanced team victory as the Celtics beat the Wizards 112-98

The Boston Celtics returned to the nation’s capital, Washington DC, to face the Wizards on the road for the third time this season. After a 24-point win over the Detroit Pistons in their last game, the Celtics did what was expected of them and made easy work of a weak, rebuilding Wizards team.

Jayson Tatum led all Celtics scorers with 28 points, but there were two players for Boston (Tatum and Payton Pritchard) who posted double-doubles in the game, while seven different players scored in double figures in a very even game.

Here’s a quick recap of the Celtics’ second straight win in a slow week, culminating in the Emirates NBA Cup semifinals.

Final score: Boston Celtics 112, Washington Wizards 98

Key to the game:

A balanced performance led by Jayson Tatum: A clean sweep for the Celtics was exactly what should have been and ended up being what it was. Instead of the Celtics’ stars being the only ones coming out on top, all five starters and two bench players, Pritchard and Sam Hauser, all scored in double figures. Jayson Tatum was the star of the game with a double-double game with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Pritchard’s Sixth Man of the Year campaign continued with another impressive showing of 15 points and 11 rebounds.

They are expected to beat the teams: There were some games this season, losses to the Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies, where Boston should have been in control the entire time, but that wasn’t the case. Even with some wins this season, Boston has allowed bad teams to stay and the games have been closer than they should have been. Their biggest lead against Washington on Sunday was 22, and they never looked back. The Celtics no longer have to worry about the NBA Cup and instead need to focus on continuing to beat the weaker teams.

Game highlight: Jayson Tatum ignites Washington with an emphatic dunk

What’s next: vs. Chicago Bulls, Thursday, December 19, 7:30 p.m. ET

The last time the Bulls and Celtics met was in Chicago for NBA Cup group play, with Boston taking the lead in the final seconds and trying to increase their point difference. With another three days off before the game, it will be interesting to see how the health of the lineup develops after Al Horford missed Sunday’s win due to rest and Kristaps Porzingis left the game with right heel soreness. The Bulls are currently 11-15 this season, so Boston will likely be the expected favorite in this game as well.
