Jazz fell just short against the Lakers, 105-104

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – Anthony Davis had 33 points and 11 rebounds, LeBron James added 27 points and 14 assists and the undermanned Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Utah Jazz 105-104 on Sunday night.

After James missed a 3-pointer – his 10th attempt of the night – in the final seconds, Utah had a chance to win the game, but Will Hardy called a timeout as Collin Sexton drove to the basket for what appeared to be the go-ahead to give bucket. Sexton then fumbled the inbounds pass with 2.1 seconds left and was unable to get a shot off before the buzzer.

“We are happy to let people go in this situation,” Hardy explained. “When Collin started, he backed off, dribbled backwards and I started taking a timeout. It’s obviously loud. The hope would have been to have a few seconds more than 2.1. It’s difficult because you don’t know exactly how it would have ended if they hadn’t blown the whistle and everyone had continued playing. Maybe Collin would have ended it. I hope we get into a situation like this again and I’ll just go to the bench and sit down when he’s on the field.”

James made a running left-handed hook with 41.0 seconds left, but Walker Kessler made a putback at the other end to keep the Jazz within a basket.

Lauri Markkanen scored 22 points and John Collins 21 as the Jazz lost for the eighth time in nine games.

Davis scored 16 points in the third quarter and James took over in the fourth when Davis rested. James made four straight throws, including a reverse layup and a dunk, that extended the Lakers’ lead to 101-92.

James took on the playmaker role and Davis’ strong play gave Los Angeles a small cushion. Still, the tired Lakers had to stop the Jazz’s late run.

Utah commits more turnovers than any other team in the league, and that hurt them again as they ended up with two crucial losses. The Jazz had 15 turnovers, which led to 20 Lakers points.

James surpassed 15,000 field goals made in the second quarter, becoming the second player in NBA history to reach that mark after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (15,837).
