The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s Office has announced the official cause of death for writer-director Jeff Baena, husband of Aubrey Plaza.

The coroner’s report lists Baena’s manner of death as suicide.

The 47-year-old was pronounced dead at 10:39 a.m. on Jan. 3 at his home in Los Angeles, authorities told The Associated Press. A full report will not be available until the case is closed, the office said.

Baena was born on June 29, 1977 and grew up in Miami, Florida. He attended film school at New York University and then moved to Los Angeles to begin his career.

Baena has had more than a dozen films to his credit, most notably co-writing the 2004 film “I Heart Huckabees,” starring Jason Schwartzman, Jude Law and Naomi Watts. In 2014, he wrote and directed Life After Beth, a zombie comedy starring Plaza. It was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Baena and Plaza, best known for her breakout role on Parks and Recreation, married in 2021 but have been together since 2011. According to People, they kept their relationship private.

In May 2021, the “Parks and Recreation” actress referred to Baena as her “dear husband” in a social media post. According to The Associated Press, the couple tied the knot that same year.

“So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for coming up with another movie that takes us to Italy to cause more trouble,” Plaza wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a photo of the two of them.

The 40-year-old actress rose to fame playing April Ludgate in the television series “Parks and Recreation” and was nominated for an Emmy for her role in “The White Lotus.”

Plaza hasn’t posted anything about her husband’s death on social media recently.

She is scheduled to host the Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday.
