Jennifer Hudson shines on stage at the 2024 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Since her humble childhood in Chicago, Jennifer Hudson dreamed of seeing her name in the spotlight. At some point she will find her way there American Idolthe singer finished her run in 7th place. With fans shocked by the decision in 2004, Hudson used her time on the show to help shape her future. Since that moment, Hudson appeared in films such as dream girl and in Broadway musicals like The color purple. Hudson won awards, released music and built her career. She decided to take a break from the studio to ring in the holiday season when she performed during the 2024 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Throughout the event, Kelly Clarkson welcomed numerous artists to the stage, including Dan + Shay, The Backstreet Boys and even Clarkson himself. But for Hudson, the evening came just months after she co-released her first Christmas album The gift of love. As Hudson took the stage, she spread Christmas cheer and once again proved why she deserved to win American Idol while reporting on “Winter Wonderland.”

Fans seemed to agree, with Hudson’s performance receiving comments like, “She looks so beautiful and I love that voice, it’s so graceful and powerful. I love it.” Another person added, “Yay I love that Song really. Beautifully sung. Thank you, beautiful Jennifer.”

Jennifer Hudson had a little help with her new Christmas album

Although Hudson was the voice behind her new Christmas album, she revealed that she got a lot of help from her teenage son, David Daniel Otunga Jr. When it came to creating the album, the singer explained, “He’s a holiday fanatic, just like me.” He was very present in the whole thing. We sat by the fireplace and watched holiday films together. He even said, “Mom, this song here is my favorite song from the Christmas album.” He gives his dime. He is encouraging, he helped me learn different notes.”

Aside from helping his mother, David seemed to love giving back. Hudson says, “He is always looking for gifts to give to others. He is a giver. And that’s how he was raised. That is the tradition that lies within him. He is very similar to me. He loves seeing everyone come together and have dinner together, have a good time together and see the unity in everything.”
