There’s a second-hand store in Paris known for employing the best-dressed salespeople in the industry. I visited Nuovo at the end of June last year – Lily-Rose Depp and Gabbriette had been there a few weeks earlier – and was greeted by a waiter in a cropped cocoon-back jacket, low-slung denim and scuffed ballet flats. She looked like Kate Moss in 2006: a gorgeous mean girl who knows how to be on a first-name basis with le tabac.

The jacket – rounded sleeves, hidden buttons, stand-up collar – reminded me of Aaron Esh and Miu Miu’s Fall/Winter 2024 collections: where bourgeois baby girl coats were styled with the casual ease of someone rushing into the store: Hoods up, sunglasses on, models storm down the catwalk with handbags in the crook of their arms. It was an attempt, as Esh explained in an interview with British fashionto capture “the mood and elegance” of the classic Left Bank snob.

I had almost forgotten about this chic saleswoman until I came across this picture of Jennifer Lawrence strolling around Los Angeles in MUNTHE wide-legged indigo denim jeans, moccasins, and another one of those tweed jackets. Squint and it could be considered something Balenciaga sold in 2006 – see: here – after Nicolas Ghesquière’s still-celebrated fall/winter collection. The domed hats and round coats dangling on skin-tight trousers and vertiginous heels – it remains a lesson in cold-blooded Parisian style even 20 years later.
