Jeopardy contestant gets redemption in Second Chance tournament after missing a question from Taylor Swift

Jeopardy kicked off the second week of its Second Chance tournament on Monday, offering a double dose of redemption for one contestant.

The two-week tournament features participants who did not win their regular games and are given another chance at success.

One of Monday’s contestants was Drew Goins, a journalist from Honolulu, Hawaii, who revealed he got a question from Taylor Swift wrong during his first appearance.

“Yeah, so I misheard a Taylor Swift question and went home worried that the Swifties were going to drag me out of my bed one night,” he said with a laugh.

“But it turns out the angriest Swiftie was my brother who’s here today,” Goins added as they pointed out his brother Zach in the crowd.

“The night before we taped, he had a whole practice board prepared for me where we were kind of like, ‘Ah, let’s just get through this, get through this, I’ve got more to learn.’ And it was totally Taylor Swift,” he said laughing.

Host Ken Jennings added: “Wow. “Well, maybe today you have a second chance,” and as fate would have it, Drew did indeed want to find redemption.

During the Jeopardy round, one of the categories was “Albums”, and the final question of the round was the $200 spot, where Drew had control of the board.

He nervously said, “Ready… finish?” as the final clue was revealed, which poetically was actually a question from Taylor Swift.

Ken Jennings said, “Here we go.” “In 2014, Taylor Swift gave us this album named after a different year,” as the audience began to laugh.

A giddy Drew was the first to speak up, replying emphatically, “What is 1989?” as Ken enthusiastically said, “Salvation for Drew!” That’s right. And the crowd goes wild,” which they actually did.

Drew already had a big lead of $11,600 at the end of the Jeopardy round, which he expanded to $33,400 in the Double Jeopardy round, securing a commanding lead, but it wasn’t an outlier as Steve Miller came second with $18,400.

They all responded correctly in Final Jeopardy, correctly identifying Tinder as the app that was previously called Matchbox, even though it had to switch because its name was similar to another company (Match.com).

While Miller made a big bet that took him to $33,401, Goins – whose 30 correct answers were the most in a game all season – was also correct and bet $3,401, bringing his total to $36,801 and the match won.

Goins’ previous appearance was in September 2024, when he selected the $800 question in the Grammy Album of the Year category.

The question was, “The first of Taylor Swift’s four AOTY Grammys went to this record in 2010,” but Drew could only smile and shake his head, unable to find the right answer: “Fearless.”

After two more semi-finals on Tuesday and Wednesday, Goins will now advance to the Group 2 final on Thursday.
