Jeremiah Fears’ heroics help Oklahoma to a comeback win over Michigan

In July, before he even announced his commitment to Oklahoma, Jeremiah Fears told OUInsider that OU would be getting their next Trae Young. On Wednesday night, Fears lived up to that hype and more. The freshman guard scored a career-best 30 points and led the Sooners in a thrilling second-half comeback to beat Michigan 87-86.

Oklahoma, trailing by as many as 11 points early in the second half, leaned on Fears’ brilliance and thrilling plays in the final moments to pull out the win. His four-point play with seconds left gave the Sooners the lead for good and cemented his status as a rising star.

The Oklahoma rally was a team effort. Duke Miles added 17 points, including a huge three-pointer during a 9-0 run that gave the Sooners their first lead of the second half. Jalon Moore scored 16 points before committing a foul with just under two minutes left.

Here are some notes about the game:

– Oklahoma erased an 11-point deficit in the second half. The Sooners trailed by as many as 11 early in the half, but made a dramatic comeback with Fears taking the lead. OU’s defense came tough and forced Michigan into harder shots as the Sooners outscored the Wolverines 49-43 in the second half.

– Fears voiced when it mattered most. The freshman guard finished with 30 career points, including a game-winning four-point play in the final seconds. After a slow start, Fears took the lead in the second half and proved he was made for the big moments.

— Duke Miles played a crucial role in the comeback. Miles finished the game with 17 points and hit a huge three-pointer in a crucial 9-0 run that gave Oklahoma its first lead late in the game.

– Jalon Moore did his part before committing the foul. Moore was the key player early on, scoring 16 points, including two three-pointers, before exiting with less than two minutes to play. The game remained in the hands of Fears and the other Sooners, who delivered.

– Glenn Taylor Jr. made an impact on both sides. Taylor’s late-game steal was huge as it kept OU within striking distance and set up Fears’ heroics. Taylor also contributed 9 points, providing valuable support in Moore’s absence.

— Oklahoma’s offense struggled at times. Aside from Fears, Miles and Moore, the Sooners struggled to find their rhythm. Taylor and Brycen Goodine each came through with timely shots in the first half.

– The Sooners struggled with foul trouble all night. Sam Godwin had limited minutes due to fouls in the first half, while Moore also committed two quick fouls in the first half. Moore also picked up four fouls before ultimately ejecting.

— Rebounding was an issue again. Michigan controlled the boards and won the battle 37-32, and OU lost both the forced turnovers and point-off turnover battles 18-14. Despite these challenges, OU’s defense remained competitive, which made this win all the more remarkable.

— Oklahoma’s win is a big step forward. With a big win over Michigan, the Sooners improve to 11-0 on the season thanks to outstanding performances from Fears, Miles and Moore.
