Jerry Jeudy’s career night in Denver is dampened by the Browns’ loss

DENVER – Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, playing his first game in Denver since joining the Broncos in March, recorded nine catches for 235 receiving yards and a touchdown, the most of his career, in Cleveland’s 41-32 loss on Monday night.

It was the most receiving yards by a player in his first game against a former team in NFL history, according to Elias Sports Bureau research, but Jeudy said he would trade all the yards for a win.

“Damn, I would,” Jeudy said. “They can have that. I need that W. That was one step closer to the playoffs. We need that.”

The Broncos drafted Jeudy with the No. 15 pick in the 2020 draft. But after four inconsistent seasons in Denver, the Broncos traded him to the Browns for a 2024 fifth- and sixth-round pick.

Jeudy did his part to nearly pull off another upset for the Browns (3-9), including a 70-yard touchdown catch and 2-point conversion that put Cleveland up 28 early in the third quarter. brought 25 to three points. But two pick-sixes from quarterback Jameis Winston – including one on a potential game-winning drive with 1:48 left – ultimately cost the Browns a loss as they suffered their 22nd losing season since returning to Cleveland in 1999.

After each catch, Jeudy was booed by the crowd at Empower Field. And he played in, putting his hand to his ear and motioning for the fans to demand more after his 2-pointer.

Asked about the boos, Jeudy said: “There were a lot of boos, right? What does that mean? Lots of catches too.”

“They only boo you,” Jeudy said, “when they know there’s something great in you.”

The change of scenery was something Jeudy wanted. He told ESPN that he requested a trade for two straight seasons before Cleveland and Denver finally completed the deal. A few days after the trade, Jeudy signed a three-year contract extension worth $58 million.

“It just didn’t work there,” Jeudy told ESPN before the Broncos game. “I felt like I was a much better player than when they used me. I wanted to go somewhere where I could be used, see my full potential and use it.”

After a slow start through the first seven weeks of the season, Jeudy was one of the most productive wide receivers in the NFL. Since Week 8, when Winston took over as the starter for the injured Deshaun Watson, Jeudy leads the NFL in receiving yards (614).

And after Monday night’s performance, he ranks fifth in the league with 880 receiving yards, putting him on track for his first 1,000-yard season.

“He’s phenomenal,” Winston said of Jeudy. “We knew what time it was at the beginning of the week. He was hungry. He prepared and was ready to come back here and show up and show up, and he did. It’s unfortunate we didn’t get that win, but I’m glad he had a great career day. He’s a great receiver.
