Jim Caldwell’s prediction | On Friday the winter pattern gets rolling

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The winter storm threat continues Sunday and Monday as a strong system sets its sights on our region. Before that happens, we will take a light snowmaking trip to the area.

Here’s what you need to know:

Light system tonight and Friday

  • A fast-moving clipper ship will bring light snow and severe weather, primarily affecting central and eastern Kentucky.
  • Expect light buildup (coating up to 1″) and possible slippery areas.
  • Elevations in eastern Kentucky could increase a little more.
  • Gusty winds and cold temperatures (above 20 to below 30 degrees) make it feel even colder.

Winter storm threat Sunday and Monday

The track of this system is still uncertain. We’ll have a better idea by Friday and Saturday. The GFS model experienced a northward shift with the last run. This means that the heaviest snow cover is north of Lexington. The EURO has pushed this limit ever higher and has stayed that way! Some of the highest amounts of snow will occur in and around Cincinnati.

If the northward turn occurs, it would mean a better chance of ice formation for our region.

  • Significant impacts on travel are expected.
  • Icy rain and wind gusts of up to 50 km/h can cause power problems.
  • These ice accumulations could be significant for parts of Kentucky.
  • Snowfall levels are uncertain due to possible sleet and freezing rain.
  • Brutal wind chills are expected, especially in areas with significant ice accumulation.

Cold temperatures follow

  • Bitterly cold temperatures will blow behind the storm, with minimum temperatures possibly reaching zero or below.
  • The wind chill will be even colder, especially Tuesday into Thursday morning.

Take care of each other!
