Jim Carrey returned for Sonic 3 because “I honestly need the money”

Jim Carrey has his reasons for coming out of retirement Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

“I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, honestly. Yes,” he said with a smile while speaking at the film’s UK premiere in London on Tuesday, December 10.

The actor reprises his role as villain Doctor Robotnik in the latest installment of the video game-to-film series.

It was in 2022, during courtship Sonic the Hedgehog 2that Carrey said he planned to retire from his acting career.

“I’m pretty serious,” he said Access Hollywood at the time of my retirement, adding, “It depends. If the angels bring some kind of script written in gold ink that tells me it’s going to be really important for people to see, then maybe I’ll keep going.” But I’m pausing.

“No detail was too small,” he added of Carrey’s involvement. “He helped design the prosthetics and everything. Talking about things to do after doing three movies with Jim Carrey is a real brainwave.”

The cast of the new film also includes Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba, James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally and Krysten Ritter.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters on December 20th.
