Jim Carrey stars in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ because ‘I need the money’

Jim Carrey said in April 2022 that he would likely retire from acting after starring as the evil Dr. Robotnik had taken over. It was Carrey’s second time playing the video game villain. His first major role as Robotnik was in 2020’s “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which marked Carrey’s first major role in a studio film since the 2014 sequel “Dumb and Dumber To.”

“Well, I’m retiring. Yes, probably. I’m pretty serious,” Carrey told Access Hollywood at the “Sonic 2” press tour. “It depends. If the angels bring some kind of script written in gold ink that tells me it’s going to be really important for people to see, then maybe I’ll keep going, but I’m taking a break.”

Carrey added: “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and that’s something that as long as time exists, maybe.” never hear another celebrity say – I’ve had enough.” I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

The comedian’s retirement was short-lived, however, as he returned as Dr. for the third time in this month’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” Robotnik is back. Why does Carrey keep returning to the “Sonic” film universe? Money, he recently joked to AP Entertainment.

An AP reporter on the “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” red carpet asked Carrey about his original retirement quote and said, “You said in a previous interview that if you had a script written in gold ink by angels, you would come back .” ”

“That night was an exaggeration, yes,” Carrey replied with a laugh. “I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit exaggerated. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and honestly I need the money.”

While the first “Sonic” film was Carrey’s first major studio film in six years, he has since appeared in the indie films “The Bad Batch” and “Dark Crimes.” He also headlined the Showtime comedy series “Kidding,” which ran for 20 episodes over two seasons before being canceled. Carrey also guest starred as Joe Biden on “Saturday Night Live” in six episodes in 2020.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” hits theaters on December 20th from Paramount Pictures
