Jimmy Butler indicates he wants to be traded by the Miami Heat

Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler has indicated he wants to move on from the team he led to two NBA Finals.

Butler said Thursday night that he had lost his enjoyment of playing in Miami.

“I want to regain my joy in playing basketball. Wherever that may be, we will find out here soon,” he told reporters. “I’m happy here off the court, but I want to be somewhat dominant again, I want to play basketball and help this team win, and right now I’m not doing that.”

When asked if he could enjoy the court again with the Heat, Butler replied: “Probably not.”

The six-time All-Star’s comments came after the Heat’s 128-115 loss to the Indiana Pacers, in which Butler scored just nine points. A day earlier he had only scored nine goals against the New Orleans Pelicans.

ESPN reported later Thursday that Butler “has told the Miami Heat that he wants the team to trade him,” citing league sources. NBC News has not independently verified this reporting.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra attributes the back-to-back poor performances in part to Butler’s two-week absence due to illness.

But the comments about finding joy come against a backdrop of poor relations with team management that have fueled weeks of speculation.

On Christmas Day, ESPN reported that Butler favored a trade before the Feb. 6 deadline. In response, Heat president Pat Riley issued a rare statement saying, “We will make it clear – we are not trading Jimmy Butler.”

It’s unclear what happens after Butler goes public with his dissatisfaction.

The Heat decided not to offer Butler a new contract before the 2024-25 season because he was eligible for a two-year, $113 million contract extension.

Butler missed the Heat’s first-round playoff series last season due to a knee injury. After the team’s loss to the Boston Celtics, Butler suggested on social media that the team would have won the series had he been healthy.

“If you’re not playing on the court, you should keep your mouth shut,” Riley replied.

According to ESPN sources, Butler has indicated he would be open to playing somewhere other than Miami next.

The 35-year-old, known for his combative two-way style and impressive playoff scoring, is in the final year of his $49 million contract and could become a free agent in July.
