Aside from being elected President of the United States, Carter was an incredible person who grew up on a cotton and peanut farm. He worked on his family’s farm here in southwest Georgia, eventually leaving school and attending the Naval Academy, where he became a nuclear submariner before returning to Georgia to run his family’s business. Politics came calling and he became the 76th governor of Georgia in 1971, making waves almost immediately when he said, “The era of racial discrimination is over.” *** A few years later, he won the 1977 presidential election.
