JJ Redick on whether LeBron James needs some rest amid recent crisis

After being embarrassed 109-80 by the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, the Los Angeles Lakers have now lost five of their last seven games after winning six in a row. Their offense was terrible during this time, and one of the main culprits was LeBron James.

James has scored fewer than 20 points in five of the last six games. On Monday, he had one of the worst games anyone can remember, shooting 4 of 16 from the field and scoring just 10 points. Turnovers continue to be a problem for him – he turned the ball over six times against Minnesota, marking the eighth time in 11 games that he had at least five turnovers.

Perhaps this poor game is due to the fact that the Lakers have played their last five games within seven days. This led head coach JJ Redick to question whether James should stick to his preseason goal of playing in all 82 games this season.

About ESPN:

“I don’t know that it’s in his best interest and our best interest for him to do that, but if he’s good and he’s feeling good, then he should play,” Redick said after James scored 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting Points reached a season-low -16 shots from the field in LA’s 109-80 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. “But of course we want to do it as well as possible.”

One possible sign that James is tired is how quickly his 3-point shooting has deteriorated. He made 43% of his 3-point attempts in his first 15 games, but he has now gone four games without making a single three-pointer while attempting 19 shots from beyond the arc during that span.

Of course, given that he is nearing his 40th birthday and is in his 22nd NBA season, there is now some speculation among fans that he may finally be beginning the decline that many have been waiting for. Then again, maybe six weeks into the season he just needs some rest.

Starting next week, LA will go through a 10-day period in which only two games will be played. Perhaps this, along with an appropriate reduction in his minutes and workload, will lead to James getting back to being James without having to miss games due to load management.
