Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who leads the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns this season, became the league’s first 4,000-yard passer with a pass in the first quarter of Sunday’s NFL Week 16 game at Paycor Stadium this season receiver Tee Higgins.

A short time later, Burrow found Higgins for a 2-yard touchdown reception, a pass that Burrow threw just before it hit the ground.

“Just out of this world for Burrow,” CBS play-by-play announcer Spero Dedes said during the broadcast. “Just upper body strength to get that ball out. We’re running out of adjectives to describe what we see from Joe Burrow.”

Burrow entered Sunday’s game needing 23 yards for 4,000 on the season after rushing for 271 yards at Tennessee last week. It’s the third time in five NFL seasons that Burrow has surpassed 4,000 yards receiving.

Burrow set the franchise single-season record with 4,611 passing yards in 2021. Last week at Tennessee, he broke his own Bengals’ single-season record with his 36th passing touchdown of the season.

In the Bengals’ win in Dallas on Monday night, Burrow appeared to be limping shortly after Cowboys rookie Marist Liufau grabbed and twisted his facemask, and was shown during the broadcast pulling a sleeve over his left knee. The injury did not force Burrow from the game.

Two days later, the NFL announced that it would consider using replay assistance for face mask penalties.

Former Bengals QB Carson Palmer said last week he was concerned about the “frustration on (Burrows’) face.”

Burrow said after the Dallas game that he is confident the Bengals can get receiver Tee Higgins for next season.

During a loss to the Chargers in Week 11, Burrow became the league’s first quarterback with 3,000 passing yards this season. He also made NFL history with his impressive stats in consecutive losses.
