Joe Burrow says Trey Hendrickson should win Defensive Player of the Year

Bengals pass rusher Trey Hendrickson recorded 3.5 sacks against the Steelers on Saturday night, giving him a season-high 17.5 sacks. And Joe Burrow believes Hendrickson earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.

After the game, Burrow credited the Bengals’ defense as the key to keeping them alive in Sunday’s playoff hunt, and he said Hendrickson in particular made the difference.

“Trey Hendrickson, after tonight I don’t know who else will be named Defensive Player of the Year other than him,” Burrow said. “He was incredible tonight. Every time they didn’t have chip help, he got to the quarterback.”

The betting odds have Hendrickson a long shot: Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain is the favorite at -200, and Steelers pass rusher TJ Watt is next at +350. Hendrickson is one of three players at +2000, along with Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and Lions safety Kerby Joseph.

In four seasons since the Bengals signed Hendrickson as a free agent from the Saints, Hendrickson has 57 sacks. He was one of the best free agent signings in recent NFL history, and if a few games go well for the Bengals and they sneak into the playoffs today, Hendrickson could make life difficult for Josh Allen and the Bills in the wild card round make playoffs.
