It’s decision day for the College Football Playoff committee. The final CFP rankings will be released on Sunday at noon ET and we will all know the fate of Ohio State and the other playoff contenders. We have many questions. Who will the Buckeyes play and what will they see? Will Alabama prevail against SMU in the battle for the final spot?

What we do know is that Ohio State should be safe on the field and hosting a first-round game in Columbus, so look forward to that. However, we really don’t know what the 13-member CFP committee will do after the results of the conference championship games with teams like Penn State, Texas and SMU, so we’re all nervous.

As you know, we love following FOX College Football’s Joel Klatt, and he’s taken it upon himself to make his own predictions about the CFP round seedings and matchups we’ll be looking at today. We did the same thing and disagreed a little. Klatt believes this is what will happen.

First round bye (four highest ranked conference champions)

No. 1 Seed – Oregon DucksNo. 2 Seed – Georgia BulldogsNo. 3 Seed – Boise State BroncosNo. 4 seed – Arizona State Sun Devils

What we think

That’s exactly right and I don’t see any other way to change it. Because of Clemson’s win in the ACC Championship Game, Big 12 champion Arizona State likely gets the final first-round bye as the fourth-seeded conference champion – as crazy as that is.

First-round matchup (No. 5 seed vs. No. 12)

No. 5 seed Notre Dame vs. No. 12 seed Alabama

What we say

Notre Dame will be at the top of the rankings, but cannot receive a first-round bye under the current format because it is not in a conference and has no chance of winning a conference championship. So the Irish get the first available seed beyond that. However, we believe the opponent here will most likely be Clemson as a bid stealer and not Alabama. We’ll see.

First-round matchup (No. 6 seed vs. No. 11)

Ohio State Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer (33) celebrates a sack with safety Sonny Styles (6) during the second half of the NCAA football game against the Indiana Hoosiers at Ohio Stadium in Columbus on Saturday, November 23, 2024. No. 6 Ohio State vs. No. 11 Clemson

What we say

Again, we have different opinions, but so do many people. We have a lot of respect for Klatt, but we don’t expect OSU to jump that far and get a No. 7 seed instead. However, this would be much more interesting and a better combination than some of the other alternatives out there.

First-round matchup (No. 7 seed vs. No. 10)

No. 7 Texas vs. No. 10 Indiana

What we say

According to Klatt, Texas falls under Ohio State, but we disagree. We really see this matchup where Ohio State is and hosts Indiana for a rematch, but it all depends on what the committee does. Like most people, we like that better, but we’ll wait and see.

First-round matchup (No. 8 seed vs. No. 9 seed)

Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson (6) celebrates after scoring a touchdown during an NCAA football game between Tennessee and UTEP at Neyland Stadium on Saturday, November 23, 2024.Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson (6) celebrates after scoring a touchdown during an NCAA football game between Tennessee and UTEP at Neyland Stadium on Saturday, November 23, 2024.

No. 8 Penn State vs. No. 9 Tennessee

What we say

This is the same matchup we have. We don’t see how the CFP committee can keep Penn State with the same number of losses, less impressive wins, and the head-to-head result over Ohio State. But will the committee drop the Nittany Lions under Tennessee? Stay tuned as the higher seed will go to the host.
