Juventus against Man City: Pep Guardiola doubts himself after the defeat

Pep Guardiola said he was questioning his role as Manchester City manager after his team’s nightmare run extended to a seventh defeat in 10 games as Juventus became 2-0 champions in Turin with goals from Dusan Vlahovic and Weston McKennie -League victory sealed.

City travel to Paris Saint-Germain on matchday seven next month knowing defeat could drop them into the bottom eight of the Champions League table and leave the club with the humiliation of being eliminated from the competition in the knockout stages to be eliminated.

Against a Juventus side that had won just one of their last six games in all competitions, City struggled to create chances of victory and with neighbors Manchester United next in the Premier League on Sunday at the Etihad, said Guardiola, who started this, questions himself as his team lurches from one defeat to the next.

“Of course (I ask myself). I have my thoughts,” Guardiola said. “I am stable in good and bad moments. I’m trying to find a way to do this. I am incredibly honest. When we play well, we play well.”

“The locker room is stable. We are happy about a win, but not happy about a defeat. What can we do? We feel sorry for ourselves. No, we improve it and move on.”

“We have been in this situation many times this month. Rest tomorrow, prepare for United with our people, insist on the good things we are doing and try to get better.”

Despite the slump in form, which is by far the worst of his managerial career, Guardiola said he is not facing his biggest challenge.

“My biggest challenge is to keep getting results in the first few seasons (at Barcelona). It’s life, it happens, sometimes you have a bad time. I will insist until we get there,” the Catalan coach said.

City midfielder Ilkay Gündogan said that “confidence is a big part” of the team’s problems, adding that “it’s also a mental problem”. But Guardiola rejected Gundogan’s assessment and said his team could still qualify for the next stage if they avoid defeat in Paris.

“I don’t agree with Ilkay,” Guardiola said. “Of course it’s tough, except for one or two games during that time that weren’t good, the rest we played well.”

“We were incredibly aggressive in our high pressing. It’s a cross (for the first goal) and (Dusan) Vlahovic is strong in that position.”

“I don’t think there were any defensive errors. We miss the last pass, we don’t get into the six-yard box and we have the composure, the moment and the assist, but we are the best. I love my team.”

“(Qualification) is the goal. We need one point, three points. Go to Paris to try and then the last game is at home.”
