Kalamazoo residents react to shooting on West Main Street

A shooting on West Main Street in Kalamazoo sent shockwaves through the West Michigan community on Tuesday.

The suspect in the shooting is still at large and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) said the incident was not a random act of violence.

Three people were shot and one person was struck by debris in the parking lot of Little Caesars on West Main around 5 p.m. that evening.

News Channel 3 spoke with members of the community who said this has become a growing problem.

“It’s just a shame,” said John Coopes, who was at Little Caesars just hours before the incident. I don’t understand how something like this could happen. I went in there once around 5 p.m. to pick up pizzas, and it’s very busy at that time. So, it’s just a shame.”

When Robert Shreve heard the news, he immediately thought of his children.

“My kids eat there,” he said. “We eat there as a family. I mean, it’s just terrible.”

KDPS did not have anyone available for an on-camera interview, but issued the following statement:

We understand the community’s concerns following last night’s shooting in the 4200 block of W. Main St. Based on our investigation, we do not believe this was a random act of violence. We would like to reassure residents that our officers and detectives are actively pursuing all leads and we encourage anyone with information regarding this incident to continue to come forward. Your support is critical as we work to provide clarity and resolution in this case.

While police are actively investigating, Shreve believes people in the community can also do their part.

“It also depends on the community,” he said. “If you see any suspicious activity, call. The best thing we can do is band together.”

Anyone with information about this incident or the suspect is asked to contact KDPS at 269-488-8911.
