Kathy Bates tears up 2025 Golden Globes speech as Shōgun’s Anna Sawai wins

Kathy Bates expected a win at the 2025 Golden Globes, but instead received a shout-out from winner Anna Sawai on stage.

Sawai’s win comes after her first-ever nomination in the category. Shogunwhich tells the story of feudal Japan in the 16th century, received multiple nominations throughout, including Best Television Series – Drama and a nod to Sawai’s co-stars Tadanobu Asano and Hiroyuki Sanada.

Sawai’s nomination follows her historic win at the 2024 Emmy Awards – where the show itself made a splash with a whopping 25 nominations.

The actress became the first woman of Asian descent to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and her emotional win was followed by another history-making moment from her co-star as Sanada became the first Japanese actress in history to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series won Drama Series.

Bates’ nomination for Matlock is her ninth Golden Globe nomination overall and comes 27 years after she won a Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Television Movie for her role in The Movie The late shift.
