Kathy Mattea visits Athens with a Christmas music program

UGA presents Christmas music series continues with the Kings of Nashville.

“A Winter Gathering with Kathy Mattea: ‘Good News’ and Other Favorites” comes to the Hodgson Concert Hall on December 11 at 7:30 p.m. This program, where she rubs shoulders with some of Music City’s finest instrumentalists, is named for the warm, warm atmosphere. soulful title song from her first Christmas album, which won a Grammy. The tour also includes dates at the Grand Ole Opry and the Kennedy Center in Washington.

Celebrated by The Washington Post Considered “one of Nashville’s premier song interpreters,” Mattea has enjoyed much success and recognition during her 35-year career in country, bluegrass and folk music, including two Grammy wins, four CMA Awards, four No. 1 country Singles and five gold albums (plus a platinum greatest hits collection).

Her latest album is Pretty Bird, produced by her old friend, roots music wizard Tim O’Brien. The extensive collection of songs tells of a time when he returned to singing, re-engaged with a singing teacher and ended with a poignant and eclectic CD.

In addition to creating and recording music and performing live on tour, Mattea has become increasingly involved in public broadcasting, consulting and making on-screen contributions to Ken Burns’ 2019 documentary for PBS, Country Music, and recently replacing founder Larry Groce as host of the long-running NPR show Mountain stage. The latter program airs Sundays at 2 p.m. on WUGA.

The UGA Presents Holiday Music Series also includes performances by the Vienna Boys’ Choir on December 18th with a concert titled “Christmas in Vienna” and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Chorus with Handel’s “Messiah” on December 21st.

  3. Visit the UGA Performing Arts Center box office Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (five minutes of parking time is available in the Performing Arts Center drop-off area to purchase or pick up tickets).

Viewers can create their own series of three or more performances at a 10% discount. Individual tickets for UGA Presents start at just $25 with promo code PAC25, and UGA student tickets are $10. Parking is free.
