The Kansas Department of Transportation is urging motorists to avoid non-essential trips as several counties are affected by snowstorms. Interstate 70 and other state highways are closed in several counties, including Wyandotte, Johnson, Douglas and Leavenworth counties in the Kansas City metropolitan area. “This is a major nationwide winter weather event,” said Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “We appreciate the public’s cooperation in staying off the roads so our teams can focus on reopening the routes as quickly and safely as possible. KDOT is working diligently under these difficult conditions. “Motorists currently traveling in affected areas are advised to immediately adjust their travel plans. If you are stuck, call *47 and provide your location. KDOT says it is working to reopen roads and priority is being given to major routes.
