Kelleher’s starting place is in doubt as Alisson returns

Caomhín Kelleher’s latest spell in Liverpool’s starting XI could come to an end with the return of Alisson Becker from injury.

The Brazilian has been named in Liverpool’s Champions League squad for Tuesday’s game in Girona after being sidelined since October with a hamstring injury that has seen him miss 11 games.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper and Diogo Jota, who has not played since suffering a chest injury against Chelsea on October 20, were both involved in training at Liverpool’s AXA training complex today, but the Portuguese striker was not in the 19-man squad. Team included party who flew from Merseyside to Spain for Tuesday night’s game.

Jota has not played since suffering a chest injury against Chelsea on October 20 and has missed 10 games.

“I’m so happy to be back,” Alisson posted on Instagram before takeoff on board the team plane.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister also did not travel as he is suspended.

But the return of Alisson and Jota is an incentive for head coach Arne Slot ahead of the upcoming busy holiday schedule.

Becker’s return is unlikely to be welcome news for Irish international Kelleher, who has enjoyed playing as Liverpool’s number one since the Brazilian’s injury problems.

Kelleher has kept five clean sheets, including two against Real Madrid and Manchester City, since marking Alisson, but made his first real mistake in Newcastle on Wednesday when a late misjudgment allowed the hosts to earn a 3-3 draw.

Kelleher is not one to shy away from becoming the number one goalkeeper, but had several opportunities to become first choice for the Reds when Alisson was injured, including during a two-month stint last season.

Arne Slot has been open about his goalkeepers’ pecking order but also praised Kelleher’s form, meaning Becker hasn’t been pushed back.

Striker Federico Chiesa, whose fitness problems have limited him to three appearances since his move in late summer, did not attend training due to illness.

Chiesa, who moved from Juventus for €12 million in the summer, scored a goal for the U21s last week as he accelerated his recovery.

Slot will still be without defenders Ibrahima Konate, Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas, all of whom are expected to be out until the new year.

Captain Virgil van Dijk has now been named to the FIFPRO Men’s World11 for the fourth time, voted by more than 21,000 professional players around the world.
