Kentucky beat Florida with three “kill shot” scoring runs, an unbeatable combination

Kentucky and Florida gave us another memorable game at Rupp Arena on Saturday, pushing the SEC opener into the 100 mark on the scoreboard. Both teams in the rivalry game scored in large numbers and each shot above their average in their first league game.

On the winning side, the Wildcats shot 58 percent in the game, with 14 three-pointers made and 48 percent from distance. The Gators trailed Kentucky by six points and hit 55 percent of their field shots, making 12 three-pointers in the 106-100 loss. Florida also had 31 second chance points.

“Absolute lava,” Matt Norlander said of the extremely efficient afternoon at Rupp Arena. “There’s a very good chance we won’t see a more efficient offensive performance between two big teams for the rest of the season.”

ESPN’s Myron Medcalf compared Kentucky’s efficiency to that of the Boston Celtics and found that the Wildcats’ 147 points per 100 possessions is 27 points above Boston’s average this season. “Kentucky just produced one of the greatest offensive performances we’ve seen in recent memory in a Top 25 matchup,” he added.

It was clearly an attacking game in every respect, and Kentucky won it with three double-digit scoring runs all afternoon. College basketball statistician Evan Miyakawa provided further insight into the Wildcats’ runs of 16, 10 and 10 points, known as “Kill Shots” when a team scores more than 10 unanswered points. Miyakawa noted that teams with three separate “kill shots” in a game have never lost in the 299 times this has happened. “It’s unbeatable,” he added.

Two of Kentucky’s kill shots came before halftime. First, the 16-0 run that included the game’s only lead change as the Wildcats turned an 11-point deficit into a five-point lead. Five minutes later, Kentucky broke a tie with a 10-0 halftime run.

According to Miyakawa, two separate kill shots in a single game win 88 percent of the time. Two in the first half would be a much higher probability of winning.
