Kevin Durant criticizes the new NBA All-Star format: “I absolutely hate it”

The NBA announced the format for the 2024 All-Star Game in San Francisco on Tuesday: a new four-team tournament, three eight-player All-Star teams and a Rising Stars team.

The revised format is the league’s latest attempt to make the main event of All-Star Weekend competitive and entertaining again. Last year’s All-Star Game ended with both teams combining to score 397 points in a one-sided 211-186 game.

While there is still plenty of time for public opinion to change between now and the game on February 16, the format is controversial to say the least. In fact, Kevin Durant is not a fan at all.

“I hate it,” the Phoenix Suns star told reporters on Tuesday. “I absolutely hate it. The All-Star Game format is changing and the other formats are all terrible in my opinion. We should just go back to East vs. West and just play a game.”

“I think we tried to bring that flavor back with All-Star Weekend, but I think we should just keep it traditional. We’ll see how this works. You never know, I could be wrong. I’m just another guy with a different opinion.

Durant has been named an All-Star 14 times in his career since 2010, including last season, and will likely be named an All-Star again this season after averaging 25.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Durant’s opinion could change once the dust settles, like with LeBron James and the play-in tournament, but that’s not a good start for the format and Durant is just the first of likely many players to express their opinion on the matter Express format.
