Kevin O’Connell sends well wishes to Randy Moss: “We’re here for him”

Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell began his press conference Wednesday at the TCO Performance Center sending his well wishes to Randy Moss.

Ahead of Sunday’s NFL Countdown on ESPN, Moss shared on social media that he was suffering from an internal health issue. It forces him to wear sunglasses during his television duties as an NFL analyst. He did not say exactly what the disease was, but urged the men to get checked and have their blood tests done.

“I just want to send him our well wishes and support on behalf of the entire Minnesota Vikings organization. We love Randy and know our fan base feels the same,” said O’Connell. “I just want to let him know that we are here for him and we always have his back. I just wish him all the best and support.”

O’Connell and Moss were briefly teammates on the New England Patriots. Their lockers were close together and he remembers a special moment with Moss at practice.

“I threw him a go ball. It hit him overturning, instead of catching him, it probably threw him to the ground,” O’Connell said. “I was so impressed with the way he prepared and how much the game meant to him. His energy really made us a better team and made the players around him better. One of the greatest there ever was.”

Kirk Cousins is returning to Minnesota

It’s the biggest story of the week. Kirk Cousins will be back in Minneapolis for the first time since leaving the Vikings as a free agent for the Falcons. He had a season with ups and downs. Last week he threw four interceptions in a 17-13 loss to the LA Chargers. O’Connell completed two seasons with Cousins, including a division title, and is looking for his best this week.

Cousins was playing arguably the best football of his career when he suffered an Achilles tendon injury in Green Bay.

“I have a lot of respect for Kirk. Having had the opportunity to spend two years with him here, I just know what an impressive player he is,” said O’Connell. “What Kirk has done best over the two years is just the dialogue and the connection between him and me trying to build our version of the offense and his responsibility for that.”

Will Reichard and Andrew DePaola return

The 21-day practice windows for kicker Will Reichard and long snapper Andrew DePaola opened Tuesday. O’Connell said that barring any setbacks, he hopes to have her available on Sunday. The Vikings have already waived long snapper Jake McQuaide. Parker Romo, who took all but one kick in Reichard’s absence, remains on the roster.
