Kirk Herbstreit’s son Chase commits to Michigan to play quarterback

Chase Herbstreit, a Class of 2025 quarterback and son of ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, has committed to Michigan.

Herbstreit, the St. On3 reported that Herbstreit will join the Wolverines as the second scholarship quarterback in the 2025 class, joining No. 1 prospect Bryce Underwood.

Kirk Herbstreit, a former Ohio State quarterback, is a regular on ESPN’s “College GameDay” and an analyst on Amazon Prime’s “Thursday Night Football.” His son’s decision to play for Michigan adds another aspect to a rivalry that only grew more heated during the Wolverines’ four-game winning streak against Ryan Day and the Buckeyes.

Michigan’s roster is in the midst of a significant transition, particularly at quarterback. Instead of the 85 scholarship limit, schools will have a maximum of 105 scholarships next season, with the ability to distribute scholarships and revenue as they see fit.

It’s unclear how many quarterbacks Michigan will carry under that 105-player limit, but the depth chart will likely change with Underwood’s arrival. Starting quarterback Davis Warren is a senior with a redshirt year available, and backup Alex Orji is a junior. Jadyn Davis, the top quarterback in Michigan’s 2024 class, is redshirting this year and appeared in one game.

Michigan is also looking for a new offensive coordinator after firing Kirk Campbell last week.
