Knicks Bulletin: “If I can’t make a layup or a shot, I’ll swing the ball.”

Knicks Bulletin: “If I can’t make a layup or a shot, I’ll swing the ball.”

The New York Knicks may have made a name for themselves this season with a stellar offense, but the truth is that these days they are starting to put every team they face on defense.

Ask the Orlando Magic, who couldn’t even break the 85-point mark in Friday’s game against New York, losing a home game at MSG South 108-85. Suffocating!

Here’s what Coach Thibs and a few Knicks and Magicians said before and after yesterday’s affair.

Tom Thibodeau

On Surviving the Physical Game of Magic:

“It’s not just Suggs. He is a great player. He has grown a lot, especially because of the injuries they suffered. But it’s their entire team, so to speak.

“He fits their style of play perfectly – very aggressive on the ball, physical. They also have a great length at the front so the edges are protected.”

What makes the Magic a difficult team:

“They’re long and versatile, guys who can guard multiple positions. Obviously you want to be strong on both sides of the ball, but (your defense) gives you the foundation and you can build it from there. This is the right way.

“There are nights when you can’t shoot the ball as well, but you can still have a chance to win.”

On Karl-Anthony Towns’ constant foul problems:

“There are good aggressive fouls and there are fouls that are obviously cheap and you have to eliminate them.” I think that’s the most important thing for him to understand – the difference between the two and what it’s called.

“And I think discipline is the most important thing. And we want the contact, but we also want it to be intelligent. It’s a big part of physicality, it’s a big part of winning. What are the officers looking for?

“He’s been around long enough to know that there are things they’re looking for that are triggering calls. So be disciplined. The verticality is one of them, the positioning of the screens is the other.”

On Mitchell Robinson’s rehab progress:

“He still has some challenges to overcome, but he has done a great job. He’s light, he’s slim, he’s worked extremely hard. So we just want to make sure we’re patient and let him work through it.”

On Robinson’s next rehab phase:

“Once we get that part done, we’ll make contact and then we’ll probably be cleared to practice.”

On Mike Brown’s firing:

“You know to some extent what we are going through. He’s a great person, a great coach.”

Jalen Brunson

On Josh Hart’s playing style:

“The best way to describe Josh is controlled chaos. He finds a way to make everyone on the court more physical and tougher. That’s exactly what he is. It’s just in his DNA.”

On the Magic’s foul trouble on Friday that makes things easier for the Knicks:

“Obviously (Suggs) has had foul trouble and he’s a key factor for them. So we wanted to attack him and see what he would do. And he got his fifth foul and that kind of changed the course of the game.

“We got a few more stops, got a few easier throws and kind of got away with it.”

On the Knicks’ defense against the Magic:

“Great. Things like that have to carry over to the next game and then go from there. Stay consistent.”

Josh Hart

How they found a way to win despite only making four 3-pointers:

“Yeah, hopefully that helps the ratings. Aren’t the ratings so low because we shoot too many threes? We did the right thing and forced a lot of tough twos.

“That’s what’s special about this team: We can win games even if we don’t shoot the ball well.”

On his approach to high-contact games like Friday:

“I like this environment. It’s fun. I feel like it suits me. It suits my game.”

On his role in the team:

“My game is very simple. I don’t go out and try to do ball screens and 18 dribbles, dribble combos and stuff like that.

“I keep it simple. If I can’t get a layup or a shot, I’ll swing the ball and get these guys the ball. And blend in with their surroundings.”

On taking advantage of Suggs’ aggressive defense:

“Of course he’s a great defender, but he’s very aggressive. And sometimes we use that aggression against him to get him into bad trouble. We succeeded.”

Karl Anthony cities

On the Knicks’ balanced offense on Friday:

“We are doing a good job. We score, one of the best offensive teams in the NBA

“We give ourselves the chance to win every night. When we are allowed to be physically active, we are at our best.”

To avoid getting into foul trouble:

“Let’s start with the man in the mirror. Maybe I need to make better decisions. I might give up one or two (bad fouls). So do my job first. Take out the ones I can handle.”

“(Avoiding some fouls) is not up to me. It is what it is. The best part is that we win. That’s the only thing that matters at the end of the day.”

How to enable your opponents to play a physical game and benefit from it:

“We do a good job, especially when we are allowed to play physically. Then we are at our best.

“We take advantage of our opportunities – we are able to get stops, get turnovers and convert them into points.”

Mikal Bridges

On his Christmas charitable efforts as a member of the Knicks:

“It’s great to be able to do this.

“I grew up with a single mother, so I know how much these mothers go through. And I don’t even know the full extent of it because there are things that my mother did that I probably don’t know about to this day.”

Jamahl Mosley (Orlando Magic head coach)

On turnovers ruining the Magic’s chances against the Knicks:

“We did a great job in the first half getting the shots we wanted right.

“We had eight turnovers in the third quarter alone, and then the game came to a head.”

On his team’s problems against New York:

“They’re already a pretty good offensive team. You don’t need any help.”

On Mike Brown’s firing:

“He was my mentor and I know how good he is and how much he cares, how he helped pave the way for so many of us in the game right now. It hurts because of the man I know he is and what he represents and what he has done for this game and for so many of us sitting in these seats right now.”

On limiting the Knicks to four 3-point shots, but not dealing properly with Brunson:

“We did the right thing and forced a lot of tough two-point shots.

“You’ve got Jalen Brunson there who can make a lot of tough two-point shots…”

Jalen Suggs (Orlando Magic player)

His team’s concentration in the first half was not there in the second:

“We handled the ball consciously in the first half. Losing that focus contributed to us losing the game.

“I found it a little difficult to score in the third quarter. I thought we had a lot of good looks that just didn’t let up (and) that carried over to the start of the fourth period.”

On his five fouls that hurt the Magic in Friday’s loss:

“Man, I picked up fouls that were on the floor.

“This happens. I can’t let them affect your mood. Had some tough opponents tonight, which is part of basketball – they gave it their best.”
