Knicks vs. Hawks, NBA Cup quarterfinal score, live updates and more: Trae Young comes alive at Madison Square Garden

The defensive brilliance of Dyson Daniels takes the big stage in a matchup with two other productive and active perimeter defenders: New York’s Josh Hart and OG Anunoby.

Daniels, a third-year winger from Australia, leads the NBA in steals, totaling 73 entering Tuesday night’s game at MSG. No. 2 is Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams with 49. That’s 24 steals between first and second. To reach 24 steals from second place, you have to drop all the way back to 61st, where four players were tied with 25 steals.

Daniels also comes into the game with a league-leading 150 deflections, according to NBA stats. That’s 60 more than second place, where Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox and New York’s OG Anunoby are tied with 90 points.

Even crazier: Daniels did it in 775 minutes, which is well below the minute total of Fox (930) and Anunoby (991).

Daniels also ranks fourth in the NBA among guards with 362 field goals defended – behind Dillon Brooks (371), Josh Hart (366) and Fox (364). Anunoby is fifth 348.

He stood at 6 feet, 7.5 inches before the 2022 NBA Draft, where he was selected No. 8 overall by New Orleans after one year at the G League Ignite. Add three inches and you have his wingspan. He’s athletic and strong, but he’s really shown that he has a knack for disruption.

Dyson shadows Jalen Brunson, who has already made two three-pointers and has 11 points at halftime.

Hart moves towards Trae Young, who already has three turnovers and only delivered his first assist five minutes before the end of the half.
