Kris Abrams-Draine steps up for Denver’s defense

A look at how the Broncos’ rookies played in their 31-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday afternoon.

Point out: Broncos rookie cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine has made major strides with Riley Moss unavailable. As the Colts marched down the field in the final seconds of the first half, the fifth-round pick broke up quarterback Anthony Richardson’s deep pass to beat Alec Pierce wide in the end zone. Indianapolis had to settle for a field goal and went into the locker room with a lead of 6 instead of 10. It was the second week in a row that the Missouri player came under pressure after coming off the bench late in Denver’s win over Cleveland.

Lowlight: Quarterback Bo Nix has fallen victim to turnover fever in recent weeks. He threw three interceptions on Sunday and had five in the last two games. All three picks Sunday were intercepted on the Colts’ field side, including one after Marvin Mims Jr. set up the offense with a 27-yard punt return at the Colts’ 39-yard line in the third quarter. Three plays later, Nix gifted a safety pick to Nick Cross on third-and-10.

analysis: Nix had by far his worst game of the season. His footwork was poor and decision making was equally poor. On his third interception after the Mims returned, the ball came late and he stared right at Courtland Sutton, resulting in a slight turnover. Granted, he threw the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. But if the Broncos want to stay in the playoff race or be competitive in the postseason, Nix will have to be much better.

Unsung hero

OLB Nik Bonitto: It might be time for Bonitto to prepare for his trip to Orlando next month. Bonitto improved his Pro Bowl chances in the fourth quarter when he intercepted Adonai Mitchell’s lateral cross-field pass and sprinted into the end zone for a 50-yard touchdown to extend Denver’s lead to 24-13.
