Kristaps Porzingis injury: Celtics center leaves Wizards game with heel pain

Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis had to leave Sunday’s game against the Wizards with a foot injury. The starting big appeared to tweak his foot after completing an alley-oop with just over five minutes left in the second quarter. Porzingis was substituted from the game just over a minute later and was later deemed questionable by the team to return at halftime. Luke Kornet started the second half at center in place of Porzingis, while Al Horford (rest) was already out on Sunday.

Porzingis had put together one of his best games of the season against his former team before the injury. In 11 minutes, Porzingis was 5 of 6 from the field and scored 11 points while helping Boston build a double-digit lead on the road.

After his surprisingly early return from offseason leg surgery, it’s been a relatively smooth run on the floor for Porzingis this season. Porzingis appeared in six games entering Sunday’s game and averaged 20.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while receiving his usual minute load (28.8 per game) almost immediately. Porzingis injured his ankle in Saturday’s loss to the Grizzlies but was able to recover in the game.

The good news for the Celtics is that Porzingis will get an extended break after Sunday night to rest his injury. The Celtics don’t return to the field until Thursday night in Boston when they play Chicago.
