KU loses its first game this season

Kansas Basketball had its first real test of the season on Wednesday against Creighton, suffering a 76-63 loss.

The No. 1 Jayhawks remained undefeated — having beaten UNC, Michigan State and Duke — but couldn’t maintain enough momentum to defeat Creighton. The Bluejays came away with a one-two punch in Las Vegas, but always had a squad that could challenge KU coach Bill Self’s team, and that’s exactly what happened. It was a rematch of a 2022 NCAA Tournament game that Kansas won.

UPDATE: 9:19 p.m. (CT): Creighton leads 65-54 with 7:34 remaining in the second half

There will be games where teams force Dajuan Harris Jr. to take a lot of shots, and that certainly happened tonight. He made 18 attempts from the field and eight from distance. The problem is that while he’s shooting 3 of 8 from behind the arc, he’s a total of 5 of 18 from the field en route to 13 points – which is a team high but not an effective way for Kansas to score the most points -Player.

UPDATE: 9:08 p.m. (CT): Creighton leads 56-51 with 11:29 remaining in the second half

Zach Clemence hasn’t been particularly relied upon for Kansas so far this season, but he’s giving the Jayhawks important minutes here in the second half. However, KU is still five points behind with about 11.5 minutes remaining in regulation time. Kansas needs to do something about Pop Isaacs, who is up to 23 points on the night, including 11 in the second half.

UPDATE: 8:58 p.m. (CT): Creighton leads 49-40 with 4:00 left in the second half

Kansas started quickly in the second half and went on a run, but Creighton was able to regain a significant lead. Of note, the Jayhawks’ KJ Adams picked up three fouls. Considering that KU is already without a member of its key group in Rylan Griffen, it is even more important to overcome Adams’ foul problem.

UPDATE: 8:21 p.m. (CT): Creighton leads 33-22 with 3:57 remaining in the first half

Creighton continued to be able to consistently hit shots, while Kansas did not. That’s partly why the Bluejays are doubling the Jayhawks in total rebounding (18-9 so far). Kansas has actually handled the ball better than Creighton, but that hasn’t mattered so far.

UPDATE: 8:12 p.m. (CT): Creighton leads 25-18 with 6:46 left in the first half

Towards the end of the first half, Kansas seemed to be slowly gaining a foothold. The Bluejays are not as superior to the Jayhawks as they seemed at the start of the game. Creighton’s Pop Isaacs leads all scorers with nine points, and Kansas’ Hunter Dickinson only has two points and needs to step up his game.

UPDATE: 8:02 p.m. (CT): Creighton leads 21-11 with 11:05 left in the first half

Kansas went into this game knowing it would have to defend Creighton’s 3-point shot, but that hasn’t happened yet. The Bluejays built a 10-point lead early in the first half, thanks in part to 5-for-8 shooting from behind the arc. On the other side of the court, the Jayhawks are 1-for-6 on 3s.

UPDATE: 7:51 p.m. (CT): Creighton leads 10-2 with 16:41 remaining in the first half

This is the Jayhawks’ first real road test of the season, and it’s not going well. Less than four minutes into the game, Kansas is eight points behind. AJ Storr has certainly struggled so far, and if that continues, Rakease Passmore’s role will become even more important with Rylan Griffen unavailable.
