Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African American culture that takes place from December 26th to January 1st and culminates in a community festival called Karamu.

The seven-day celebration of Kwanzaa is intended to commemorate the seven principles of the holiday: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Shared Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economy), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani ( Believe).

Founded by activist Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa is based on African harvest traditions. It was first celebrated in 1966.
