Kyle Shanahan gives an injury update for 49ers LB Dre Greenlaw

Dre Greenlaw practiced this week for the first time since tearing his Achilles tendon in the Super Bowl.

Here’s what head coach Kyle Shanahan said about Greenlaw’s week of practice, courtesy of the 49ers’ public relations department.

Q: How did Greenlaw get through the week?

SHANAHAN: “He had a really good week. It was great for him to have him back out there. It was great for us. We loved having him with us, even in the first week after the Achilles tendon problem. I think it’s so crucial to a man’s confidence. I met a lot of the scout team reps, did a lot of individual things with the guys and it was a great week and hopefully next week will be even better.”

Q: I know you guys pretty much established at the beginning of this week that he wasn’t going to play. Do you think he could potentially play here next week?

SHANAHAN: “I think they’re open to it, but also the game after that is a Thursday night game. I think that makes it a little more difficult. We’ll just have to see how he feels and stuff. But since these games are so close together, that’s also a problem. I won’t decide at all now. We’ll see how next week goes, but I would say it would be an outside chance.”

Q: Did he show flashes where he moved like Dre?

SHANAHAN: “Oh yeah. When guys come back, they come back healthy. The boys are coming back and can move, they have fresh legs and can walk. But it’s about gaining that confidence to respond. They’ve been at full speed for a while before they get back to football, but when you get back to football, running and stuff like that isn’t really in the plan. You have to react and cover people, back up and immediately stop and explode forward. So it’s more about the guys gaining that confidence because it’s such a traumatic injury, tearing your Achilles tendon and stuff. He’s been moving great, it’s just a matter of building his stamina and confidence so he’s ready to go into a football game.”
